Wireless design for a high-bay distribution warehouse

How we approach a warehouse where handheld scanners lose connection in the racking aisles.

This is a representative example of a common engagement, describing our approach. It is not an account of a named client project.

The typical problem

Scanner users report disconnections and slow transactions deep in the racking aisles, often worse when stock levels are high. Access points were installed on the ceiling to provide coverage across the open floor, but signal does not reach the aisles reliably.

How we approach it

  • Agree the requirements around the least capable scanner in use, including roaming between access points while moving.
  • Carry out an AP-on-a-Stick survey at the intended mounting height in representative aisles, with stock in place, to measure real attenuation through racking.
  • Use the measured data to calibrate a predictive model, then design access point positions, mounting heights and antenna choices for the aisles as well as the open floor.
  • Provide a drop schedule and bill of materials for the installer.
  • Validate after installation, walking the aisles with survey equipment to confirm coverage and roaming against the design.

What the client receives

A design based on measured data rather than assumptions, clear installation documentation, and a validation report confirming each area meets the agreed criteria.

Measured. Designed. Validated.
